Just over two months remain until the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and we now formally know what the US men’s national team will be sporting on the field. The U.S. men’s and women’s soccer teams will wear an all-white home jersey with navy blue accents around the neck region and both red and blue on the sleeves. The away jersey is a lighter blue color with an almost cloud-like design, and it was also revealed by Nike on Wednesday.
The Nike swoosh can be seen on both sleeves of both outfits, as the sportswear firm sought to pay homage to another American sport with the shirt. Both sleeves include swooshes that resemble those on American football jerseys. On the inside of the back of the jersey, “States United” is also inscribed.
According to Nike, the ideas for these outfits came from discussions with athletes. Additionally, 100% recycled polyester was used to create more than 75% of the Nike Football clothing line.
According to Nike’s press release, “The 2022 USA collection serves as a symbol of national pride and draws inspiration from the United States’ diverse and storied sporting heritage, as well as the role of the U.S. Soccer Federation as leaders in shaping – and uniting – sport culture throughout the nation.
“The iconic U.S. uniform design cues include bold stripes, an enlarged center crest similar to basketball jerseys, double Swooshes on the sleeves similar to those on American football jerseys, the unusual shoulder and sleeve cut-and-sew construction and pattern of a hockey jersey, and timeless block lettering,” according to the article.
The away jersey’s design was made using a “ice-dying method” to produce a pattern that honors “diversity and youth.”
The USMNT made their roster public on Wednesday for the two forthcoming friendlies against Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, September 27, and Japan on Friday, September 23, where they will likely don their new uniforms in advance of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
